AWS Community Day is constantly growing and is not possible without dedicated volunteers. We are therefore extremely grateful for anyone who wants to take a look behind the scenes and help out. As a thank you for your support, we also offer you some benefits.

Welcome AWS Community Day South Africa Volunteers!

Our event is completely free to attend, but if you'd like to get even more involved, we’re looking for a few enthusiastic volunteers to help out on the day.

Lend a hand with setup, registration, or guiding attendees—and in return, you'll gain behind-the-scenes experience, connect with fellow cloud enthusiasts, and be an essential part of making the event a success.

Volunteer Benefits

As a volunteer, you'll receive a Staff Pass, giving you access to all event sessions and networking opportunities when you're not on shift.

Volunteers receive:

  5. Access to all Conference Sessions, once shift is complete or as duties allow.

Volunteer Requirements

Event Volunteers are required to:
  1. Be at least 18 years of age
  2. Attend the mandatory Volunteer Orientation activities
  3. Assist in Pre-Event Preparation Activities
  4. Be available during all dates of the entire event
  5. Have a valid email address, mobile number and Whatsapp for communication
  6. Be responsible for working with Volunteer Manager to create your own schedule
  7. Agree to the Volunteer Release & Waiver of Liability
  8. Acknowledge and adhere to the Volunteer Policies and Guidelines
  9. Accept and Sign the Volunteer Contract

Volunteer Roles


In this role you will:
  1. Welcome attendees to AWS Community Day South Africa
  2. Assist attendees with digital check-in
  3. Distribute badges, lanyards, and answer any general questions from attendees
  4. Remind attendees to wear badges at all times
  5. Handle any registration issues (ie. purchasing upgrades, reprinting a badge)
  6. Serve as Info Desk where attendees can inquire about other things related to the locale or event (i.e. local maps, nearby restaurants, event speakers, event events, etc.)
  7. Volunteer registrars will work with our hired professional on-site Registration Manager, and will receive individual detailed training onsite, including an introduction to the registration software

Registration volunteers must be computer literate and have the ability to stay calm when faced with a large crowd with lots of questions. Enjoying working with people is a must. Standing will be required for busy times. This position requires ability to troubleshoot, process questions/information, and be a positive face for AWS Community Day South Africa. Attendees will expect you to have the answer to everything, so familiarize yourself with the event schedule; special events, restaurants, and other items that you believe will contribute to an overall positive event experience including information about the event for first-time attendees.


In this role you will:
  1. Handout Swag Bags to Delegates once they are registered.

Swag volunteers have the ability to stay calm when faced with a large crowd with lots of questions. Enjoying working with people is a must. Standing will be required for busy times


In this role you will:
  1. Greet and welcome attendees, providing directions and general information for the event venue, as well as seeing to their general comfort
  2. Help direct attendees to the right rooms and point out where events are being held
  3. Checking in volunteers as they report for duty
  4. Handling Lost and Found inquiries
  5. Checking in and out supplies from the Supply Room

Hospitality Volunteers will be stationed at the Help Desk and report to the Support Manager. Hospitality volunteers must be computer literate and have the ability to stay calm when faced with a large crowd with lots of questions. Enjoying working with people is a must. Standing will be required for busy times. This position requires ability to trouble-shoot, process questions/information, and be a positive face for AWS Community Day South Africa. Attendees will expect you to have the answer to everything, so familiarize yourself with the event schedule; special events, restaurants, and other items that you believe will contribute to an overall positive event experience including information about the event for first-time attendees.


In this role you will:
  1. Responsible for checking in and assisting exhibitors
  2. Monitoring attendee access to the Exhibition Hall during public hours
  3. Work closely with exhibitors and will help execute on events and activities happening throughout the Exhibition Hall
  4. Encouraging attendees to visit the Exhibition Hall


In this role you will:
  1. Ensure General Session keynotes are running on schedule by timing each of the speakers according to the timings given in the agenda
  2. Setting and starting the table stop watch timer for each new speaker.

In this role you will:
  1. Ensure General Session PowerPoint slides are switched to the correct PowerPoint slide on schedule according to the timings given in the PowerPoint slide schedule


In this role you will:
  1. Hold Speaker badges during their keynote.
  2. Assist Speakers put on Lavalier Microphones before going to the platform
  3. Ensure Lavalier Microphones are set to the correct volume level
  4. Ensure Speakers are wearing the Lavalier Microphones before coming to the podium
  5. Ensure Lavalier microphones are not on when they are meant to be off
  6. Ensure Lavalier Microphones are turned on when Speaker goes to podium and turned off when Speaker leaves podium

In this role you will:
  1. Responsible for ensuring Speakers are where they are supposed to be at the right time
  2. If a Speaker is missing, this person will help locate him/her and get them to their session
  3. Materials that will be provided to the Speaker Coordinator include speaker contact info and photos


In this role you will:
  1. Make sure everyone who wants to pass the ‘check point’ has a valid badge and the right access permissions
  2. There are a handful of badge types that this role will need to be familiar with – and you will need to familiarize yourself with this badges

Attendees will expect you to have the answer to everything, so familiarize yourself with the event schedules, the Event Program Guide, the event mobile app, room locations, etc. If you’re a people person this will be a great role for you!


In this role you will:
  1. Direct assistant to AWS Community South Africa Management Staff


In this role you will:
  1. Direct VIP’s to their reserved seating
  2. Ensure VIP's needs are met and they are happy and comfortable


In this role you will:
  1. Keep the event safe, secure and enjoyable for all those who attend
  2. Perform routine search procedures utilizing bag searches prior to attendees entering the venue
  3. Provide a visual deterrence by maintaining high visibility at all times
  4. Conduct detailed observations of people and property within their area of responsibility
  5. Ensure attendees are always wearing their event badges at all times
  6. Observe attendees to ensure that they are abiding by the rules and regulations of the venue at all times
  7. Alert AWS Community South Africa Management to any safety hazards to be fixed
  8. Alert AWS Community South Africa management to any equipment to be secured
  9. Perform crowd control, and may be required to direct traffic after the event is over

In this role you will:
  1. Assist in setting up and taking down of exhibits, signage, equipment, furniture, supplies, before, during and after the event

Ability to do lots of heavy lifting is required.


In this role you will:
  1. Maintain, manage and curate the official event Social Media Outlets (Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram)
  2. Source and post relevant social updates
  3. Select best photos from onsite Photographers to be used in Social Media Outlets

These volunteers must be experienced social media marketers and “Tweeters” who are knowledgeable about tweeting protocol and Twitter best practices (use of hash tags, re-tweeting and attribution, etc.). Volunteers must be on site for the duration of the event. Volunteers will not be posting social media messages as official representatives of AWS Community South Africa but will coordinate with AWS Community South Africa staff to ensure consistency of message.

We are looking for a couple of experienced volunteer photographers who can take photos of our event to capture all the networking and energy buzzing at the event. Photographers are needed to properly document all aspects of the event and provide AWS Community Day Management with copies of the best photos to use on our website, social media outlets, newsletter and other media.

Please note: This role is for those with developed photography skills that can provide their own professional HD camera for the job.

Do you have HD video equipment? Do you love short film/advert work and would love to help film for AWS Community Day South Africa? We are looking for a couple of experienced volunteer videographers who can take short films of our event to capture all the networking and energy buzzing at the event. Videographers will also interview selected Speakers and Attendees about their positive experience at AWS Community Day South Africa event. Videographer is needed to properly document all aspects of the event and provide AWS Community Day Staff with copies of the raw footage which will be edited later to make a highlight video and positive testimonial clips.

In this role you will:
  1. Daily duties will change depending on needs that develop throughout the event and will be directed by your Volunteer Manager
  2. Wears many different hats, and is flexible so as to fill in as needed and directed
  3. Available for special requests, session needs, handling issues that come up during the day, supporting other volunteer positions, and jumping into any role that requires assistance
  4. A floater may have several different assignments within the course of a day
  5. A floater may be asked to roam the entire event area looking for issues you can handle or that need attention by staff
